I also went to CHTR. It was the opening night and the threatre was packed and brimming with expectation. I am not a regular theatre goer but was anxious to see this play and could go with an unbiased attitude as I had not seen the original film with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. I felt the "noise" of the deep south was missing - a few crickets doing their mating calls in the background perhaps?

Now as a red blooded male I am a great fan of Saana and absolutlely willed her to do well, but alas, I don't think that she quite pulled it off. I just didn't see a character bursting forth that I could believe in and get into their heads. The rest of the cast did well and in particular the ambitious in-laws, James never came out of first gear and Phylicia and Lester were impressive and very believable.

First night nerves/anxiety? Possibly but my friends who went a week later also had some reservations about Saana's performance.

I have now seen the original film and in truth, it is a tough act to follow on stage but I had already decided on my review of the play.

For me good - 7/10 - but must do better.
