An Evening of Movies and Musicals at Christmas

An Evening of Movies and Musicals has become a sensation since it debuted in early 2012 with a sell out concert at St David’s Hall in Cardiff. Featuring the music of John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner and many more, the show has sold out every date thus far and received glowing acclaim from press and public alike. The likes of Ruthie Henshall, Peter Karrie and Nathan James have all appeared along with a 100 piece orchestra for Cardiff and Edinburgh and with the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra for Dublin. In London our orchestra shall be the LGSO who’s great reputation and professionalism shall engross the audience with smash hit film scores such as Superman, Star Wars and E.T to name a few, under the baton of founding conductor/Producer, Welsh Maestro Matthew J Hampson.

The Edinburgh Evening News described it as “sensational, engrossing, engaging and affecting…the ensemble received a well-deserved standing ovation”.

West End legend John Owen-Jones and current star of Wicked Louise Dearman will be joined by the West End Gospel Choir and Welsh musical theatre actress Sarah Lark (Mamma Mia, Les Mis, Witches of Eastwick), guiding the audience through hits from the best-loved musicals. This show will be the ideal way to begin Christmas celebrations, with a specially themed section for the festive period.

I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical

The X Factor Musical – I Can’t Sing! is the hilarious new musical which goes behind the microphones and under the judges’ desks at the biggest show on earth and reveals the (not necessarily accurate) tale of heartache and laughter which keeps millions of us glued to The X Factor, week-after-week.

Written by BAFTA Award-winning comedian Harry Hill (3 BAFTAs, 7 British Comedy Awards and a Golden Rose of Montreux) with music and lyrics by Steve Brown (Spend, Spend, Spend, Spitting Image, Laura Mvula, TV Burp), I Can’t Sing! is co-produced by the patron saint of fame himself, Mr Simon Cowell.

Irreverent, anarchic and yet strangely touching, this spectacular musical comedy features a host of new and deliriously funny songs that will delight both fans and sceptics of The X Factor in equal measure.

Directed by Sean Foley (co-founder of The Right Size; The Play What I Wrote; The Ladykillers; What The Butler Saw) with choreography by Kate Prince (Founder of Zoonation; Into The Hoods and Some Like It Hip Hop) and set design by Es Devlin (Creative Director for Take That, Kanye West and Pet Shop Boys stadium tours; designer for London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony), the worlds of theatrical and television entertainment have come together to create an incredible musical spectacular in the West End’s most renowned theatre, the London Palladium.

Viva Forever Spice Girls Musical To Close Early

Producer Judy Craymer has confirmed that The New Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! is to close early at the end of June after just six months in London’s West End.

Judy Craymer said: “The show has evolved since we first opened and is now brighter, lighter and funnier, but despite the wonderful audiences and extremely positive feedback we just can’t make it work.

“I’m so proud of everyone involved in this production. Viva Forever! may be taking its leave for now in the West End but the legacy of Spice Girls will never fade.”

VIVA FOREVER! has exploded on to the stage at London’s Piccadilly Theatre and is wowing audiences with its clever mix of classic SPICE GIRLS hits combined with JENNIFER SAUNDERS’ irresistibly funny story.

Bringing some much needed spice to the West End, the show charts the journey of a girl and the people around her she loves, as she’s propelled into the superficial world of ‘Starmaker’, a TV talent show that offers the fame and fortune she thinks she craves. But life in the spotlight isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be, for the contestants, their families or even those who have the deciding votes!

Including the hit songs Stop, Say You’ll Be There, 2 Become 1 and many more, VIVA FOREVER! hits all the high notes for a fabulous feel-good night out. So spice up your life with this exhilarating new musical that celebrates love, friendship and just being who you really, really wanna be…!

The UK Trailer for Joss Whedon’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

The brand new UK trailer for Joss Whedon’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING has now been released. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is released across the UK and Ireland by Kaleidoscope Entertainment on 14 June 2013.

In the late summer of 2011, Joss Whedon completed principal photography on Marvel’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. Upon his return to Los Angeles Joss was contractually obligated to take a week off before beginning his director’s cut of the film. Rather than travel to an exotic location, or disconnect from the world and unwind, Joss chose to make a completely different kind of film. A film that would be shot almost entirely in his home, a film that would be shot in just under 12 days, a film that would be made with close friends, and a film made with a sincere love for the text, a film that would be MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

Shakespeare’s classic comedy is given a contemporary spin in Joss Whedon’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Shot in just 12 days (and using the original text), the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that we call love.  A Special Presentation at Toronto International Film Festival 2012 and the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2013, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING was also selected as the Closing Night film for the Glasgow Film Festival 2013.

Leonato (Clark Gregg – AVENGERS ASSEMBLE; IRON MAN), the governor of Messina, is visited by his friend Don Pedro (Reed Diamond – MONEYBALL; GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK), who is returning from a victorious campaign against his rebellious brother Don John (Sean Maher – SERENITY; TV’s FIREFLY). Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick (Alexis Denisof – AVENGERS ASSEMBLE; TV’s ANGEL) and Claudio (Fran Kranz – DIARY OF A WIMPY KID; TV’s DOLLHOUSE).  While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero (newcomer Jillian Morgese), and Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice (Amy Acker – THE CABIN IN THE WOODS; TV’s ANGEL; DOLLHOUSE), the governor’s niece. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange, with Leonato, their marriage.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, Don Pedro, with the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero, attempts to sport with Benedick and Beatrice in an effort to trick the two into falling in love. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, with the help of his allies Conrade (Riki Lindhome – MILLION DOLLAR BABY) and Borachio (Spencer Treat Clark – MYSTIC RIVER), plots against the happy couple, using his own form of trickery to try to destroy the marriage before it begins.  A series of comic and tragic events may continue to keep the two couples from truly finding happiness, but then again perhaps love may prevail.

Derren Brown announces West End run for INFAMOUS

The multi-award winning acknowledged master of psychological illusion returns to the West End stage with his new one-man show DERREN BROWN: INFAMOUS. Following a sell-out 81-date national tour, the dark manipulator brings his unique brand of magic and mind control to the Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, from June 24 to August 17.

INFAMOUS, a more ‘personal’ show, sees Derren re-united with his close collaborator and friend actor, writer Andy Nyman. He says:   “We abandoned the template that had won us a couple of Oliviers over the years for a very different feel. It’s important to us that the shows feel like something you can’t find anywhere else in theatre or entertainment: not even my own previous efforts. I’m really excited by the result. The show is a secret so I’m not giving away what’s in it, but it’s a psychological roller-coaster based around audience participation. And it’s got a real heart to it. The response on tour has been incredible, it’s all such a treat.”

INFAMOUS is Derren’s 6th show since 2003 and sees him return to the Palace Theatre, nine years after his debut West End show, ‘Derren Brown Live’, in 2004. Since then he has toured every year and been watched by an estimated audience of over one million people. He has won two prestigious Olivier Awards, for SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (2006) and SVENGALI (2012), and confesses that touring is still his favourite thing to do.

INFAMOUS is produced by Michael Vine, Andrew O’Connor & Corrie McGuire for Objective Talent Management. Directed by Andy Nyman, written by Derren Brown & Andy Nyman. Set Design by Simon Higlett, Lighting Design by Tim Cascall, Sound Design by Colin Pink. Video Design by Duncan MacLean

Trevor Ashley to Make West End Debut in Liza (on an E) at the Vaudeville Theatre

Following several sell-out seasons and an acclaimed tour of Australia, Trevor Ashley, one of the foremost musical theatre stars from Down Under, will make his West End debut as the irrepressible, incomparable and infamously iconic Liza Minnelli in LIZA (on an E) at the Vaudeville Theatre from Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th May, in a strictly limited six show season.

From her marriage to Australia’s song-and-dance darling, Peter Allen, to her notorious pill-popping and ubiquitous showbiz family, ‘Liza’ will dish the dirt on her extraordinary life like you’ve never seen her before, accompanied by a live on stage band, as she raises the rafters and brings the entire house down with power-packed performances of all her greatest hits.

The critically acclaimed and (at least a little bit) controversial Liza (on an E) is an evening that will have you laughing, crying and screaming for more as the supremely talented Ashley channels Liza (and her alter egos), with guest appearances by her mother. Raucous, ruinous and just the right (or wrong) side of risqué, it’s a rollercoaster ride of riotous proportions.

Commenting on his first performances in London, Trevor says: “I am so completely and utterly thrilled to be coming to make my debut in the West End. This show and its music are such a genuine thrill to perform and I can’t wait to tear up the Vaudeville, surely one of the most beautiful theatres in London. As Liza herself would say, ‘It’s gonna be TCHERRIFFFIC!'”

Liza (on an E) will play in the West End for one week only and is sure to be the talk of the town. So, “come taste the wine, come hear the band…” and don’t miss the opportunity to see an international hit show like no other. It’s a fond and loving tribute to a living legend.

Well known in his native Australia as a musical theatre star, Trevor Ashley created the role of Miss Understanding in the original Australian cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical, racking up well over 600 performances in the part, following which he appeared in Gale Edwards’ hit production of Jerry Springer – The Opera at Sydney Opera House. He played the cross-dressing role of Edna Turnblad in the smash hit musical Hairspray in both Melbourne and Sydney, and played Franz Leibkind in the Australian production of The Producers in Melbourne.

Trevor’s work as a solo artist has taken him all over the world, with performances in New York, London, Asia and Australia, in shows as both himself and a dazzling array of characters. Liza (on an E) has previously sold out two seasons in Sydney, and toured to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, receiving rave reviews. He also created a bespoke piece for Sydney Opera House entitled I’m Every Woman, in which he channeled twelve famous females in all their glory.

LIZA (on an E) is produced by Neil Eckersley for Speckulation Entertainment and written by Trevor Ashley and Dean Bryant, with direction by Dean Bryant.

Mark Thomas, Omid Djalili, Phill Jupitus, Isy Suttie and Imran Yusef – A Benefit Night For Belarus Free Theatre

Political activist and comedian, Mark Thomas, is bringing together an excellent line-up of comics for yet another great cause. Mark will be joined by Omid Djalili, Phill Jupitus, Isy Suttie and Imran Yusef at London’s Comedy Store on the Spring bank holiday, Monday 27th May, for a benefit to help raise funds for Belarus Free Theatre.

Belarus has the last remaining dictatorship in Europe and the Belarus Free Theatre was founded in March 2005 by Natalia Kaliada and Nicolai Khalezin. Their performances are often done in secret and are subject to targeting and censorship by the authorities. They sought political asylum in the UK in 2011 and created a new part of the company in London. They continue their work with the permanent ensemble left behind in Minsk, who perform and tour around the world as Belarus Free Theatre. The funds raised from this evening will help the company in their work.

Belarus Free Theatre creates unique theatre because of its innovative approach to urgent and challenging social and political issues. It is impossible for any other company to perform the plays devised and produced by the company as the essence of their work is born out of their personal experiences and research. They have performed in over 42 countries around the world and is recognised for its unique role in theatre as well as for its denial of the narrow options offered to it by a contemporary world. Its trustees include Michael Attenborough, Jude Law and Samuel West.
